Judgment Day

Posted: November 8, 2010 in Greek Sing 2010

November 14th is quickly approaching and orgs have been working hard to perfect their performances. The Overall Committee has rounded up five individuals to judge the show and determine the winners of Greek Sing 2010.

Among the panel of judges is recent Penn State graduate and Sigma Pi Fraternity brother Adam Nye. Nye served as the Overall Director for Greek Sing 2009. Special Events Overall Kait Sawyer said Nye is enthusiastic about returning to this year’s production in this new role.

Greek Sing also welcomes Bill Schroder, Susan Rusell and Raymond Sage to the panel. All three are professors here in the Penn State theatre department and are ready to provide our fraternities and sororities with their professional opinions.

Schroder, who specializes in costume and set design, has worked with The Children’s Theatre of Minneapolis and designed sets and costumes for theatre, opera and dance during his career. Schroder is currently the head of MFA costume design at Penn State.

Russell is a performer and playwright who has worked on Broadway as well as with The New York City Opera. She has also had the opportunity to teach musical theatre in the United Kingdom. Russell currently has a concentration in acting and theatre history.

Sage, his expertise in voice and musical theatre, has been a guest on Late Night with David Letterman and performed in Broadway and national productions like Beauty and the Beast and Camelot. Before coming to Penn State he worked at Trinity College and The American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

Susan LeGalley, Assistant Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life, has been selected as the fifth judge to represent the Greek community. Susan is a member of Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority and was recently elected to serve as her National Panhellenic Delegate.

Professors Dirk Mateer and Frank Clemente as well as University President Dr. Graham Spanier were also extended invitations to serve on the panel of judges but were unable to accept because of prior commitments.

Spirit Week is finally here! Come to the HUB Monday through Friday from 2-4pm and partake in the festivities! Monday there will be a “Name that Broadway Tune” game, which is sure to be a hit. Jessica Harvey of Sigma Sigma Sigma exclaimed, “I love theater and musicals so I think I could dominate this game!” Sounds like a challenge! Tuesday there will be “Broadway Trivia,” and don’t worry- it won’t be too tricky… Wednesday, come show off your talent or simply sing along with your friends in “Sing a Broadway Tune.” Remember, this cannot be a tune that is in the show you are performing for Greek Sing- that would be way too easy! Thursday is “Wear Your Greek Sing Shirt” day; so make sure to display your Greek Sing pride! The official judging of the T-Shirts will be Saturday, November 13, and this is worth 15 spirit points. Friday, come out and participate in the last event of the week, “Name that Playbill.” There will be sign in sheets in room 235 of the HUB, so make sure you stop by and get spirit points for your organization!

To rack the points even higher, check out the Kinect event in “The Corner Pocket” in the HUB on Thursday, November 11th. From 2-8pm, you can play Xbox games and enter for a chance to win prizes!

Seven Days… and counting

Posted: November 8, 2010 in Greek Sing 2010

One week. Seven days. 168 hours. 10,080 minutes. Any way you slice it, Greek Sing 2010 is quickly approaching. The event will be held Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. in Eisenhower Auditorium located on the corner of Shortlidge and Eisenhower Roads. As pairs and triads of the four Greek Councils prepare for their performances, the Greek Sing 2010 Executive Director, Ariel Sealing, and her executive board are working to make this the best Greek Sing yet!

“I think that people are going to be pleasantly surprised by the skill level of the performances and there may be a few surprises they hadn’t expected,” Ariel Said.

Why should YOU attend Greek Sing 2010? Because you will experience the spirit and enthusiasm of one of the largest organizations at Penn State, because you see the hard work and dedication of the Greek Community and because you will observe a collaboration of all Greek Councils on a large scale, which only occurs once a semester, Ariel said.

So take out your wallet, purchase a ticket and support the Gayle Beyer’s Scholarship fund. To learn more about the why Penn State Greek Life sings, please refer to the “Gayle Beyer’s Scholarship” tab at the top of the page.

Tickets for the Penn State Panhellenic Council’s Greek Sing may be purchased at Eisenhower Auditorium box office (weekday hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or via telephone (814-863-0255 or 1-800-ARTS-TIX).
